Audition Requirements

(please choose the level that best demonstrates your ability)

Level 1

  1. An excerpt from two pieces (contrasting styles) that best demonstrates his or her abilities.
  2. Major and Minor Scales up to five sharps and flats.
  3. Play the melody to a blues with a one solo chorus.

Level 2

  1. An excerpt from two pieces (contrasting styles) that best demonstrates his or her abilities.
  2. Major and up to 4 sharps and flats (Minor Scales optional).
  3. Play melody to a blues (solo is optional).

Level 3

  1. One excerpt (8-10 measures) that best demonstrates his or her abilities.
  2. Major Scales up to three flats and three sharps.
  3. Play the melody to a blues (no solo is required).

Students can audition by filling out the form below, or by emailing They must include a video of their audition along with their name, address, phone number and the name of the pieces that they are playing. They will be notified within 24 hours of submission that their material has been received.

Requirements for Drummers

Level 1

Rudiments: 5,7,9,13,17 Stoke Roll, Flams, Paradiddles
swing groove quartet at 120, 140,160, 200
Bossa Nova,2-3 clave rhythm, rockbeat

Level 2

Rudiments: 5,9,7,13 Stroke Roll, flams
swing groove quartet at 120,130 rockbeat

Level 3

Rudiments: 5,9 stroke roll, flams
swing groove quarter note at 100, rockbeat

Audition Dates:

Brass: June 15, July 1, July 15
Woodwinds: June 16, July 2, July 16
Rhythm Section (all other instruments): June 17, July 3, July 17

Audition results will be posted on August 1, 2013. (Please check rosters on the website.)

Also all instruments are encouraged to audition including non-traditional jazz instruments such as French horn, violin etc. Students who play more than one instrument are eligible to do multiple auditions. Instrumentation openings for the L.S.J.O., Jazz Ensemble 1 and Jazz Ensemble 2: All instruments are welcome. Progressive Jazz Ensemble: All instruments are welcome. (Progressive Jazz Ensemble will begin in the fall of 2014.)

Student Success!!!!!at the end of each cycle, students will be given a performance evaluation to ensure that they understand the information given in that particular cycle to ensure success in the next cycle. Please note that this is not a test. This is an evaluation process for the faculty to identify the strengths of each student as well as the areas for growth. At the end of each school year, students will be given a cumulative  performance evaluation based on the information given in each concert cycle.
